Perhaps one of the most highly respected National Monument in the World, it was built to honor of the great President Lincoln, located in Washington DC, USA. Built in 1922 by Architect Henry Bacon, I can say all means that his concept was highly influenced and based on the great temples in Greece.

At First Glance...

Speaking of appearance, I must say it's pretty simple to note that many Greek temples are built with a main important statue that is usually located in the center of the temple for religious purposes, thus making it an hierarchical symbol. Though in this case, the sculpture of President Lincoln was not predicated as a religious symbol, but instead an honor to Abraham Lincoln. Even the facade of the monument itself is also based on the concept of the temples in Greece, well just take a good look of how the columns are being so closely spaced apart that it can be compared with the temples in Greece alone! Just above the columns of the monument is the Architrave with intricate writings being carved, which the Greek temples also possess.

On the entrance of the monument is a long symmetrical reflecting pond. In my design opinion, I can say this long symmetrical pond is built to give the users an emphasis of a long memorial journey to the monument, also in remembrance of the painstaking journey Lincoln did for his country. Just right in front of the reflecting pond is an obelisk, the Washington Monument.

The Obelisk as a Central point of two buildings

What is interesting to note is just relatively of the central axis from the Washington Monument to be circled in a radius is The Capital Building, which is located directly in the axis of the Obelisk. Put it simply, the Washington Monument is located in the middle (Not really in the middle, I would say it's placed around 3/4) of two important buildings, the The Capital Building & the Lincoln Monument. The two buildings are spaced apart with a differently defined radius, measured from the central point of the Obelisk.

Till today, the entire design of the monument is regarded as one of the most talked about topic in the Monumental Architecture World.
